Zirconium Foil/Strip/Ribbon
Zirconium (Zr) foil, strip, and ribbon are produced from high-purity zirconium metal or alloys. HM’s advanced rolling technology, precise process parameters, and careful control of annealing temperature and time ensure the production of zirconium foil with exceptional mechanical properties, a smooth, wrinkle-free surface, uniform metallographic structure, and significantly improved longitudinal and transverse tear resistance. Please consider our zirconium plate and zirconium sheet, if you need the thickness to be more than 0.5 mm.

Zirconium Foil/Strip/Ribbon Production Process
Zirconium foil, strip, and ribbon are made of high-purity zirconium ingots through hot rolling, cold rolling, and annealing to achieve the desired thickness, strength, and ductility. Additional treatments such as polishing and chemical etching may be applied to meet specific application requirements. Here is the typical production process:
- Raw Material Selection: Zirconium Ingot or powder is selected based on purity and quality requirements.
- Melting and Casting: Zirconium is melted in a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere and cast into ingots.
- Hot Rolling: The ingot is heated and passed through rollers to reduce the thickness and achieve the desired shape.
- Cold Rolling: Further thickness reduction is achieved at room temperature, improving the material’s surface finish and mechanical properties.
- Annealing: The material is heat-treated to relieve internal stresses and improve ductility.
- Pickling and Polishing: The surface is cleaned using chemical treatments to remove oxides and improve appearance.
- Final Cutting: The material is cut into foil, strip, or ribbon forms, depending on the specific application requirements.
Zirconium Foil/Strip/Ribbon Surface Finish
Depending on the intended applications, the zirconium foil/strip/ribbon has three main surface finishes as follows:
- Black: The surface is “as swaged” or “as drawn”, retaining a coating of processing lubricants and oxides.
- Cleaned: The surface is chemically cleaned to remove all lubricants and oxides.
- Ground: The surface is centerless ground to remove all coating and to achieve precise dimensions control.

- Nuclear Energy: Zirconium foils/strips/ribbons are mainly used to manufacture casing materials for fuel elements in nuclear reactors.
- Chemical Industry: Zirconium foil/strip/ribbon has strong corrosion resistance, especially in strong acid, alkali, and high-temperature environments, so it is widely used in chemical reactors, heat exchangers, pipelines, and other equipment, especially in highly corrosive environments in the fields of chlorination, sulfuric acid production and so on.
- Aerospace: Zirconium foil/strip/ribbon is used in high-temperature parts of aerospace vehicles, such as combustion chambers, nozzles, and turbine blades, especially in special environments that require high-temperature and corrosion resistance.
